lactation counsellor
doula providing breastfeeding support

Breastfeeding support for the whole family, with preparation in pregnancy, help with the first latch after the birth, and ongoing support during the postpartum months.

Please note: I do not have to be your doula to help you with your breastfeeding concerns! You can call me anytime you run into difficulties, as a one time visit, or until we sort things out!

Breastfeeding, like so many other aspects of having a baby, is part natural instinct and part learned behaviour. This applies to both the mother and the baby, and the father/partner. Because of this, it is essential to have someone on hand, to help with the whole process. So often it is very simple adjustments and ideas that make such a huge difference in how breastfeeding goes! Being prepared, and having the right person on hand when needed, can help so much, acting as more of a preventative measure than anything else!

Some of the learning and preparation can take place during pregnancy, and then the rest begins within the first hour or so after the baby is born. Then, the learning continues through each day, and each phase the growing baby goes through. It is important to note that the father/partner is also very involved in the learning and actual breastfeeding!

As a Lactation Counsellor, I can help you prepare in pregnancy, and work with you once the baby is born, or meet you after the baby is born to work on any issues that arise. I will support you in breastfeeding by:
  • helping you prepare for breastfeeding before the baby is born. This usually involves a meeting with both parents, to go over positioning, breastfeeding mechanics and understanding, time involved etc.OR
  • being on hand for first feed after birth,
  • coming over and helping with feeds as you need the help
  • helping the father or partner learn their role in breastfeeding
  • setting up a plan to help you, whether it is before the baby is born, or after you have run into difficulties
  • being available by email and phone to help as needed (including during the night during the early postpartum days)
  • continuing to be available until you no longer feel you need my help
  • making sure you get the help you need

We can work together to make sure breastfeeding gets off to a good start, and continues to work well as the baby grows. Feel free to contact me, whether still in pregnancy, or already meeting some obstacles!

Breastfeeding should not hurt, and if it does, there needs to be adjustments made! Be sure to have someone on hand to help with those adjustments!
